The Royal Bharat Inc. was formed in 1979 after its founder, Mohan Singh, discovered that the diverse population of Cambridge and Boston was craving the flavors from the east. Starting with India Pavilion in the heart of Central Square, Cambridge, Singh introduced the exotic flavors of Indian cuisine and tantalized the taste buds of all of his customers.

Demand soon outstripped supply as lines formed around the block in the dead of winter, signaling Singh to open several other restaurants over the next few years. Gandhi, Haveli and Punjabi Dhaba are the other members of this family of restaurants.

Customers began craving the same flavors for their creations in their own kitchens, and thus Singh also opened a specialty spices store, India Food & Spices in 1984.
